Description: Cells spherical, with firm cell wall; epiphytic, mostly in groups. One-8 parietal chloroplasts, a few species with a stigma present, 1-2 contractile vacuoles. Reproduction by means of autospores or uniflagellate zoospores; in one species biflagellate zoospores reported. Also palmelloid stages have been reported. Stomatocysts observed in one species. Sexual reproduction unknown. Found in freshwater ponds in Europe and North America, epiphytic on other algae (e.g., Melosira, Nitella).
