Description: Irregular colonies of cells, forming a golden brown layer in the gelatinous sheath of other freshwater algae such as Dermatochrysis, Draparnaldia and Tetraspora. Cells first spherical, later fusiform and arranged in rows. Swarmers uniflagellate. Stomatocysts are formed when water temperatures rise to l0%C;they are subspherical with a short collar. Found in cold, slightly acid freshwater streams in North America (North Carolina, USA).
