Description: An uncommon genus of the Parmales, which contains planktonicmarine cells with cell walls composed of a small number of siliceous plates of various shapes all fitting together edge to edge. Cell small, about 5 &m in diam. Cell wall of 5 plates: 3 round plates, and 2 triradiate plates. Plates smooth, spinous. Ultrastructure presumably as in Triparma. Genus related to Triparma and Tetraparma. Reproduction not observed. Pentalamina has been observed only in Antarctic marine plankton.
