Myxohyella Geitler, 1925
Holotype species: Myxohyella socialis (Setchell & N.L.Gardner) Geitler
Original publication and holotype designation: Geitler, L. (1925). Cyanophyceae. In: Die Süsswasser-Flora Deutschlands, Österreichs und der Schweiz. Bd 12.. (Pascher, A. Eds), pp. 1-458. Jena: Verlag von Gustav Fischer.
Description: Pseudofilamentous; thallus composed of multiseriate, repeatedly irregularly, laterally divaricated ("branched"), creeping pseudofilaments, only at the ends uniseriate and with characteristic apical growth, enveloped by fine, thin, mucilaginous, colorless, not layered sheaths, which are not confluent. Cells more or less separated from one another, within pseudofilaments in irregular nematoparenchymatous rows, or (in basal parts) in pseudoparenchymatous clusters; cells irregular, apical cells usually a little elongated and rounded. Cell division irregular in more planes in successive generations, in pseudofilaments, particularly at their ends, with prevailing crosswise binary fission. End cells divide occassionally into nanocytes. Reproduction probably only by nanocytes. Marine, growing endophytically in marine red and brown algae. Probably more widely distributed, but still little known.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
