Description: Unicellular microscopic algae with globose or broadly ellipsoid cells (1.5-) 3-6 (-9) µm in diameter not embedded in mucilage. Cell wall smooth, ultrastructurally with inner polysaccharide and outer trilamellate layers. Cells with single eccentric nucleus (without nucleolus); chloroplast single and parietal, without pyrenoids and secondary carotenoids; starch production limited. Asexual reproduction by autospores, 2-8 (-16) per sporangium, released by rupture of parental cell walls which remain distinct in culture. Spores initially attached, later dispersing. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown.

Comments: Auxenochlorella si reported on the sap secreted from Populus and Ulmus trees from one site in Germany. Growth auxotrophic and cells require thiamin and are incapable of utilizing nitrates as nitrogen source. Cultures can grow in light or dark with addition of suitable organic nitrogen sources. Cell walls with acetoresistant material, but production not associated with trilamellar plates; old cultures with yellow green color. Chemotaxonomy of pigments supports recognition of genus. Genus distinguished from Chlorella in part, based on cell wall structure. 18S rRNA confirms distinctiveness of genus from Chlorella and suggests an affinity with Prototheca.
