Description: Medium-sized (30-60 µm) spherical to slightly asymmetric biflagellated cells with a posteriorly directed longitudinal flagellum and a slightly displaced transverse flagellum. Cell covering with cellulosic cell wall, plate formula Po,X,4', 3a, 7", 6c, 4s, 5"',2"". The apical intercalary plates 2a and 3a are separated by plate 3' in contrast to Scrippsiella Balech ex Loeblich III. Also the apical pore complex is distinctive, like a chamber. Chloroplasts present. Cells capable of attaching to substrates by a mucus strand. Reproduction by binary fission, sexual reproduction and resting cysts so far not recorded.
