Coelastrella Chodat, 1922

Holotype species: Coelastrella striolata Chodat

Original publication and holotype designation: Chodat, R. (1922). Matériaux pour l'histoire des algues de la Suisse. Bulletin de la Société Botanique de Geneve, série 2 13: 66-114.

Description: Thalli microscopic, unicellular or in few-celled aggregations. Cell wall hyaline to brownish with 16-40 longitudinal striations with polar thickenings absent or poorly developed; ultrastructurally, cell wall with inner, mostly polysaccharide layer and outer trilamellate layer created by coalescence of trilaminar plates produced via ER-derived vesicles; outer cell wall layer with undulate outline. Cell walls contain acetoresistant material, often thicken and peel off. Cells with numerous conspicuous vacuoles. Cells uninucleate, apparently without centrioles; chloroplast single and parietal consisting of polygonal, parietal plates or strips; pyrenoid single per cell with homogeneous stroma and surrounded by starch grains. Mature cultures brick red. Asexual reproduction by autospores, 2-16 per cell; released by rupture of parental cell wall. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Scherer, S. & Z.P. Zhong (1991). Dessication independance of terrestrial Nostoc commune ecotypes (Cyanobacteria). Microbial Ecology 22(1): 271-283.

Comments: Coelastrella in peat pools, Sphagnum beds, soil in pine woods; reported only from Europe. Genus placed in subfamily Scotiellocystoideae and distinguished from Chlorella based on cell wall structure and presence of acetoresistant material; distinction between Coelastrella and Scotiellopsis considered equivocal by some authors.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
