Description: Solitary cells cylindrical to oval, often asymmetric and slightly curved, and wider at one end or in middle. Cells 18-39 x 5-14 µm, with smooth cell walls. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal with 1-2 pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction by biflagellate, naked zoospores; 32-64 per sporangium, released through pore in cell apex. A single nonmotile spore can remain in sporangium and develop into new vegetative cell. Zoospores 5.5-9 x 2.5-3.5 µm, with anterior contractile vacuoles and stigma. Sexual reproduction unknown. Coleochlamys neustonic in freshwater; reported only from Germany and Ukraine. C. oleifera known only in culture. Two additional species, Acrochasma deflexum Korshikov and Rhopalocystis cucumis Reisigl, may also belong to Coleochlamys. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
