Hindakochloris A. Comas, 1992

Holotype species: Hindakochloris insularis A.Comas

Description: Spherical to tetrahedral thalli to 150 &m diameter with 4-64 cells embedded in extensive, colorless, mucilaginous envelope. Cells spherical to oval, 3-8.5 diameter, dispersed in matrix or in tetrahedral groups. Cell walls smooth, wall fragments often present in colony. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal with one pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by colony fragmentation and by autospores; (2-) 4-8 tetrahedrally arranged spores per sporangium; released by fragmentation of sporangial wall into 2-4 pieces, these remaining conspicuous in mucilaginous envelope for some time before dissolution. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction absent Hindakochloris planktonic in freshwater ponds; H. planktonica and H. nygaardii reported from Europe (possible record of former from Canada) with type species known only from Cuba. Genus probably cosmopolitan Two species, H. planktonica and H. nygaardii previously assigned to Thorakochloris. Genus differs from Thorakochloras which has no pyrenoid and forms hemiautospores. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
