Neodesmus Hindák, 1976

Holotype species: Neodesmus danubialis Hindák

Original publication and holotype designation: Hindák, F. (1976). Neodesmus, eine neue Gattung der Familie Scenedesmaceae (Chlorococcales, Chlorophyceae). Preslia (Prague) 48(3): 207-215.

Precise date of publication: 24 August 1976

Description: Thalli colonial, forming 2-celled coenobia, arranged in linear oblique syncoenobia, with mucilage envelope up to 3 µm around syncoenobia. Cells fusiform to cylindrical, with one acute and one obtuse pole, 5-9 x 1.5-3 µm, syncoenobia up to 65 µm. Cell walls smooth. Cells uninucleate; one parietal chloroplast with one pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores; 2 per sporangium. Daughter coenobia released by gelatinizing of parental cell wall, occasionally cap-like remnants visible next to broader cell pole. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Neodesmus planktonic in eutrophic freshwater, including rivers and fish ponds; reported from Europe and Egypt. Genus assigned to subfamily Scenedesmoideae, but the process of cell wall dissolution during coenobial release makes this placement doubtful. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
