Description: Valves linear elliptical to elliptical-lanceolate with a narrow, hyaline axial area. Uniseriate striae parallel, separated by ribs; striae not aligned across axial area but alternate with one another. Striae composed of rectangular or square areolae that extend from valve face to mantle; areolae apparently loculate, with external formina and internal vela; velum a cribrum plate on the inner surface, suspended by up to 7 struts to areolar wall. Apical slit fields at edges of valve face consist of elongate pores, separated by siliceous bars rather than rows of porelli. Rimoportulae and marginal spines absent. Girdle composed of several open bands. The unaligned striae, the nature of the apical slit fields and lack of rimoportulae serve to distinguish Neofragilaria from other members of the Diatomaceae. Collected from sand samples around Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Indian Ocean.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
