Original publication: Ettl, H. (1958). Zur Kenntnis der Klasse Volvophyceae. In: Algologische Studien. (Komárek, J. & Ettl, H. Eds), pp. 207-289. Prag [Prague]: Verlag der Tschechoslowakischen Akademie der Wissenschaften.
Description: Unicellular thalli ellipsoidal to nearly cylindrical. Four anterior isokont flagella. Papillum absent or present depending on the species. Chloroplast stellate-shaped or ill-defined depending on the species. Stigma, cell wall, and pyrenoid(s) present. Numerous contractile vacuoles scattered throughout the cytoplasm. Asexual reproduction by zoosporogenesis producing four motile daughter cells. No other asexual stages have been observed. No sexual stages have been observed in this genus.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Comments: Ettl transferred most members of the genus Pseudocarteria from the genus Carteria. Ettl describes Pseudocarteria as a parallel to Carteria. The two differ in that the former exhibits multiple (>2) contractile vacuoles scattered throughout the cytoplasm and the latter typically exhibits two (or four) anterior contractile vacuoles. Pseudocarteria is known from continental Europe, the United States, and Japan. Pseudocarteria has been collected as plankton, in rain-water pools, and in small eutrophic bodies of water. No biochemical or molecular data are available for this organism

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
