Description: Cells rarely solitary, typically in 4-16-many-celled colonies within a colorless and structure-less mucilaginous envelope. Colonies tetrahedral to spherical, up to 150 &m in diameter. Cells spherical, oval or reniform, 5-8 x 3-5 &m or up to 15 &m in diameter. Chloroplast single and parietal, without a pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by formation of 4 usually tetrahedrally disposed autospores, released upon rupture of the mother cell wall into four fragments, the fragments persistent within the mother colony's mucilage envelope; compound colonies common. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Thorakochloris planktonic or metaphytic in freshwater; known from Austria, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France and Germany. Similar to Radiococcus from which it differs principally by the presence of 4 persistent mother cell fragments within the mucilage envelope of each daughter colony; similar to Coenochloris from which it differs principally by rupture of the mother cell walls into 4 more or less equal fragments rather than into 2 fragments. T. planktonica and T. nygaardii (both with pyrenoids) transferred to Hindakochloris.
