Viridiella P.Albertano, A.Pollio & R.Taddei, 1991
Holotype species: Viridiella fridericiana P.Albertano, A.Pollio & R.Taddei
Original publication and holotype designation: Albertano, P., Pollio, A. & Taddei, R. (1991). Viridiella fridericiana (Chlorococcales, Chlorophyta), a new species isolated from extremely acid environments. Phycologia 30(4): 346-354, 16 figs.
Description: Thalli unicellular (rarely aggregated), comprised of spherical to ellipsoidal cells 4-12 &m long and 2.5-10 &m wide. Cells uninucleate, with single parietal and cup-shaped chloroplast, without pyrenoids but with starch grains. Cell walls without sporopollenin, with an inner fibrillar layer and an outer mucopolysaccharide region. Asexual reproduction by formation of 4-8 identical autospores, released by rupture of parental cell wall at one end of cell. Flagellated stages absent. Sexual reproduction unknown. Viridella known only from sulfurous soil from Italy. V. fredericiana tolerates an extreme range of pH (0.8-7.2) Viridella similar to Chlorella but differs in lacking pyrenoids and in cell wall ultrastructure.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
