Description: Colonial organism to 100 _m diameter, free-living or attached to a substratum, without definite form. Cells globular, 4-10 _m diameter, dispersed in a general, non stratified and more or less firm mucilage. However, young cells can be grouped in twos or fours, each cell bordered by a clear mucilaginous sheath which later disappears. Cells 4-10 _m diameter, without cell walls, can have amoeboid movement. Chloroplasts small in stature, two or three per cell (single after division) lamillate, central, yellow-green, often folded with irregular outline. Pyrenoids present in one species. A single contractile vacuole present but this is difficult to observe. Globular lipids, oil and refringent granules present. Vegetative reproduction by zoospores, these ellipsoid to ovoid, highly metabolic, with one or two unequal flagella, a stigma, a contractile vacuole and one or two central chloroplasts. Cysts observed with firm, strongly refringent cell walls comprised of two valves of similar dimension. Heterogloea develops in ponds and stagnant pools, floating or attached to the mucilage or other aquatic plants; known from central and southern Europe. Species distinguished based on the cell dimensions, and the presence or absence of pyrenoids. Bourrelly synonymized Heterogloea and Gleoechloris into Heterogloea, but chloroplast position in the cell, thallus form, and the position of cells in the mucilage provide distinctive characters for these genera.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
