Description: Cells colonial, united by mucilage extruded through apical pore field of concave valve to form ribbon-shaped chains. Each cell with numerous discoid chromatophores distributed in the cingular region. Frustules flexed in girdle view; one valve concave, the other convex. Pervalvar axis deep relative to valve breadth. Cingulum composed of a series of many open bands; expansions of the ligulae expand towards the center of the cell ("rudimentary septa" in the literature) at the poles. Each band with a single row of slits on the advalvar margin. Valves isopolar with rounded apices, usually slightly constricted in the middle. Valves with simple multiseriate striae arranged alternately on the 2 sides of a zigzag sternum. Concave valve with prominent apical pore fields; apical pore field lacking on convex valve. One rimoportula found at each pole of the valves; structure and orientation of the rimoportulae differ on each valve. Pronounced marginal ridges seen only on convex valve. Found in marine and brackish waters; benthic or tychoplanktonic. The presence of ligular elaborations, multiseriate striae and the arrangement of the rimoportulae serve to distinguish Entopyla from Gephyria.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
