Description: Cordiform phagotrophic heterotrophic biflagellates with two equal forward-pointing flagella issuing from apical depression; flagella used for swimming, not gliding; cell body but not flagella covered by siliceous oval scales with microporous sieve-like base and cylindrical sides bearing 4-8 rows of pores, inrolled upper and lower rims, and no upper plate; scales made in vesicles associated with mitochondria with tubular cristae; can emit pointed branching filose pseudopods from rear or ventral surface; some strains may transform completely into an amoeba.
