Description: Branched prostrate and erect filaments embedded in mucilage, forming hemispherical or globular aggregations; globular cells with parietal, plate-like plastid with 1 or 2 pyrenoids. Each cell bears a double-sheathed hair. Method of reproduction unknown. Dicoleon epiphytic on other algae or aquatic plants in freshwater; reported from New Zealand, Australia, Europe, Indian Ocean islands, Antarctica. Critical studies on reproduction and ultrastructure not carried out; assignment to Charophyceae provisional. Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chaetosphaeridium.
