Cystomonas Ettl & Gaertner, 1987, nom. illeg.

Holotype species: Cystomonas actinosphaerii (Skuja) Ettl & Gaertner

Original publication and holotype designation: Ettl, H. & Gärtner, G. (1987). Taxonomic and nomenclatural changes and descriptions of new taxa of the Tetrasporales, Chlorococcales and Gloeodendrales (Chlorophyta, Chlamydophyceae and Chlorophyceae). Nova Hedwigia 44: 509-517.

Description: Solitary (to few celled colonies in C. indica), free living or endosymbiotic cells mostly without mucilaginous envelope (present in C. indica). Cells oval, 9-19 x 6-15 &m, broadly rounded at base and mostly with slightly flattened anterior. Cell walls smooth. Cells uninucleate with two anterior contractile vacuoles. Single chloroplast parietal and cup-shaped with single prominent, basal or lateral pyrenoid with distinct starch sheath. Asexual reproduction by biflagellate zoospores or hemizoospores; 2-16 spores per sporangium, released by dissolution of sporangial wall. Zoospores 6-9 x 2.5-7 &m. Zoospores with cup shaped chloroplast, stigma, basal pyrenoid and flagellar papilla. Sexual reproduction unknown. Cystomonas planktonic in freshwater or in soil or as intracellular symbiont in Actinosphaerium; reported from Europe, Asia and North America, although species only known with highly localized distributions. C. starrii available in culture collection (UTEX 1650). Species distinguished based on habitat, presence or absence of mucilaginous envelope and variation in flagellar papilla. Species previously assigned to Chlamydomonas, Hypnomonas or Chlorococcum.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
