Halochlorella P.J.L.Dangeard, 1966, nom. inval.
Holotype species: Halochlorella rubescens P.J.L.Dangeard
Original publication and holotype designation: Dangeard, P.[J.L.] (1966 '1965'). Sur quelques algues vertes marines nouvelles observées en culture. Le Botaniste 49: 5-45, incl. 10 pls [I-X].
Description: Thalli microscopic and unicellular or forming short chains of up to 4 cells. Cells fusiform to globose, 3.5-15 µm long with conical polar thickenings; filamentous appendages to 6 µm long composed of 5 nm diameter microfibril bundles often associated with polar thickenings. Cell walls smooth, ultrastructurally with surface of fine ribs; mostly bilayered with region of microfibrils perpendicular to wall surface; polar thickenings comprise a third wall layer with vesicular inclusions. Cells uninucleate, becoming multinucleate prior to sporulation; chloroplast single and parietal divided into plate-like segments; pyrenoid single with starch envelope. With age, cultures brick red. Asexual reproduction by ovoid to ellipsoid autospores, 2-4-8 per sporangium; released by rupture of parental cell wall. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Halochlorella isolated from culture of marine algae from France and is slightly halotolerant (max. NaCl concentration = 3 %). Genus is a segregate from Chlorella and its distinction is not recognized by all workers. Genus included with Coelastrella and Graesiella in subfamily Scotiellocystoideae. Chemotaxonomy of pigments supports recognition of genus. Thalli microscopic and unicellular or forming short chains of up to 4 cells. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
