Description: Heterotrophic thecate genus with cells more or less pentagonal and irregular in lateral view. Cells are strongly compressed and asymmetric, appearing different from the left as compared to the right side. The cingulum is markedly ascending: it is oblique in left lateral view while it is straight and located nearthe apex in the right view. It appears to be incomplete but the c3 plate possesses a narrow extension located ventrally between plates 4"' and 5" and reaching the sulcus. Three prominent pointed flanges are present on the antapical side (on the 1'", 5'" and 1'"' plates), while one is located on the anterior dorsal margin of the 3'" plate. The thecal ornamentation differs among species. Pores of two sizes are present. A particular area of dense pores orsmall depressions is present on the I"" plate, close to the sulcus. The nucleus is dorsal and cells often contain food-bodies.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
