Hormoscilla Anagnostidis & Komárek, 1988
Holotype species: Hormoscilla xishaensis (M.Hua) Anagnostidis & Komárek
Original publication and holotype designation: Anagnostidis, K. & Komárek, J. (1988). Modern approach to the classification system of cyanophytes. 3. Oscillatoriales. Archiv für Hydrobiologie, Supplement 80(1-4): 327-472, 35 figs, 13 tables.
Description: Filamentous; solitary, free-living trichomes or small groups of trichomes. Trichomes with a limited growth, more or less short (to 30 cells per trichome), rarely long with many cells (in cultures), to 140 _m long, 4-12 _m wide, simple, isopolar, uniseriate, unbranched, sheathless, straight, slightly irregularly waved or semicircular curved, not attenuated at the ends, constricted or unconstricted at the crosswalls. Trichomes nonmotile, easily fragmenting into short segments (nonmotile hormocytes). Cells always shorter than wide, rarely up to almost isodiametric, shortly cylindrical or barrel-shaped, end cells widely rounded, without aerotopes, thylakoids irregularly coiled, Å perpendicularly situated to the longitudinal cell walls. Heterocytes and akinetes absent. Cell division crosswise, with all cells capable to divide. Reproduction by the division of trichomes, proceeding regularly by help of special sacrificed cells like discs; trichomes dissociate along the total length, sometimes to solitary cells. Hormocytes germinate at both ends (isopolar). Two species are known from marine localities (epi- or endozoic in invertebrates), one species was isolated from soil in England.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
