Description: Thalli unicellular and microscopic, comprised of spherical to broadly oval cells without mucilaginous envelope and attached to substratum. Cells 6-12 &m in diameter. Cell walls colorless to dark brown, highly roughened with granular encrustations. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal with one pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by biflagellate zoospores or aplanospores; 4 per sporangium. Zoospores released through an opening in cell wall that occasionally has short collar; aplanospores released by breaking parental cell wall as they expand. Zoospores oval, 6-7 x 3 &m, with apical, backwardly directly 7-8 &m long flagella, two apical contractile vacuoles and eyespot. Aplanospores develop from zoospores which are not released and then develop into vegetative cells. Ferricystis grows in mucilage of Microcystis aeruginosa in the plankton; known only from single reservoir in Slovakia. Zoospores presumed involved in infecting new Microcystis colonies. Genus similar to Chlorococcum from which it differs based on the presence of rough cell wall encrustations.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
