Phyllariochloris Pascher & Jahoda, 1928
Holotype species: Phyllariochloris torta (Korshikov) Pascher & Jahoda
Original publication and holotype designation: Pascher, A. & Jahoda, R. (1928). Neue Polyblepharidinen und Chlamydomonadinen aus den Altümpeln um Lunz. Archiv für Protistenkunde 61: 239-281.
Description: Unicellular thalli strongly flattened along the longitudinal axis. Two anterior isokont flagella arise from a shallow depression. Chloroplast cup-shaped but exhibiting perforations or reticulation. Stigma and pyrenoids absent or present depending on the species. Pyrenoids numerous when present. Numerous contractile vacuoles scattered throughout the cytoplasm. Asexual reproduction by zoosporogenesis (sporangium motile) resulting in two or four daughter zoospores. First division is longitudinal. Asexual stages (aplanospores) similar to zygotes (see below) have been reported. Sexual reproduction anisogamous. Biflagellate gametes markedly distinct. Female gametes similar to vegetative cells, male gametes small and produced as naked cells in large numbers (16-64). Fusion occurs at the anterior end and results in a quadriflagellate planozygote. Zygote thick-walled. Germination of zygote yields four naked zoospores which eventually become walled and assume the flattened shape of the mature vegetative cell. Phyllariochloris is known from eastern Europe and from India and generally is found in small bodies of stagnant water. No ultrastructural, biochemical, or molecular data are available for this organism

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
