Original publication and holotype designation: Jao, C.-C., Wei, Y.X. & Hu, H.J. (1975). Dicloster, a new genus of Chlorococcales. Acta Hydrobiologica Sinica 6(1): 115-116.

Description: Thalli colonial, forming 2- or 4-celled coenobia, if 4-celled, pairs of cells arranged in two levels. Cells embedded in mucilaginous matrix. Cells 30-60 x 3-9 µm, curved with long tapering, pointed ends, these directed away from coenobium. Cell walls smooth. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal with 1-2 (0-5) pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction by autospores; 2-8 per sporangium but organized in 1-4 coenobia; spore release by rupture of parental cell wall. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Dicloster planktonic in freshwater marshes, ponds and lakes; reported from Asia, Europe, Central America, Caribbean and southern North America. Genus assigned to subfamily Scenedesmoideae. Distinguished from Tetradesmus by cell size and number of pyrenoids, and from Scenedesmus by cell arrangement.
