Description: Unicellular Chlorophyta sensu Bremer (1985) with two flagella in clockwise basal body orientation; cell wall thin with mucilage layer around the flagellated cell, with or without papilla, the single chloroplast cup-shaped with thickened basal part cylindrical/parietal, the chloroplast surface with incisions, partly lobate; one discontinuous pyrenoid, in basal or lateral position; eyhespot pale red, elliptic to narrowly elongate in an anerior position; with two apical contractile vacuoles; nucleus in central or slightly anterior position. Asexual reproduction by zoospores, rotation of the protoplast by 90 before first cell division ("false transverse division"); sporangial wall with mucilage layer; total lysis of the sporangial wall before release of zoospores by means of a vegetative lysin enzyme. Sexual reproduction by osogamy, homo- or heterothallic; zygotes not ornamented, green.
