Zanardinia Nardo ex P.L.Crouan & H.M.Crouan, 1857
Holotype species: Zanardinia collaris (Montagne) P.Crouan & H.Crouan
Original publication and holotype designation: Crouan, [P.L.] & Crouan, [H.M.] (1857). Observations microscopiques sur l'organisation, la fructification et la dissémination de plusiers genres d'algues apparant à la famille des Dictyocées. Bulletin de la Société Botanique de France 4: 24-29.
Description: Thalli procumbent, smooth and membranous, becoming coriaceous, orbicular, fan-shaped or sometimes irregularly shaped, lobate, radially ridged, with entire or ruffled margins, with or without a fringe of hair-like filaments, loosely attached underneath by a felt of fibrous branched rhizoids; surface cells longitudinally arranged peripherally, more irregularly arranged centrally, quadrate or rectangular, with several discoid plastids without pyrenoids; in structure, thallus parenchymatous, arising from the trichothallic meristematic activity of a marginal row of two superimposed, monosiphonous, simple, freely extending filaments, giving rise to cells both forward and inward, the latter undergoing further divisions to produce an inner medulla of large, thick-walled, colourless, elongated cells and an upper and lower cortex of smaller, pigmented cells; upper cortex photosynthetic, at first of 1–2 cells, later 5–6 cells, in vertical, branched files, lower cortex of 1–2 cells, later becoming thick walled and dark coloured, giving rise to multicellular rhizoidal filaments; hairs single or grouped, arising superficially or from depressions in cortex. Monoecious, life history isomorphic; gametangia (oogonia, antheridia) and unilocular sporangia in sori, arising directly from upper cortical cells; gametangia mixed in sori, elongate-cylindrical, terminal, on simple, or little branched, erect filaments; unilocular sporangia on separate thalli, crowded, elongate-pyriform enclosing 4–6 zoospores.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
