Original publication and holotype designation: Sparmann, S.F., Leander, B.S. & Hoppenrath, M. (2008). Comparative morphology and molecular phylogeny of Apicoporus n. gen.: a new genus of marine benthic dinoflagellates formerly classified within Amphidinium. Protist 159: 383-399.

Description: Athecate genus with pellicle. Cells dorsoventrally flattened with small, low and wide, asymmetric epicone with an apical pore covered by a hook-shaped apical protrusion. Descending cingulum not connected to the sulcus at its distal end. Sulcus extends as deep furrow onto the epicone and runs down the hypocone as a shallow furrow, terminating into a semicircular posterior indentation. A ventral flap partly covers the indentation.
