Gloiocallis S.-M.Lin, Huisman & D.L.Ballantine, 2014

Holotype species: Gloiocallis dendroidea (P.Crouan & H.Crouan) Showe M.Lin, Huisman & D.L.Ballantine

Original publication and holotype designation: Lin, S.-M., Huisman, J.M. & Ballantine, D.L. (2014). Revisiting the systematics of Ganonema (Liagoraceae, Rhodophyta) with emphasis on species from the northwest Pacific Ocean. Phycologia 53(1): 37-51.

Description: Thalli erect with one or few main axes with light calcification bearing pinnate branches, up to 15 cm in height arising from a discoid holdfast, branching up to four or five orders. Cells of assimilatory filaments cylindrical with or without few terminal hairs. Carpogonial branches three or four-celled borne on inner cortical cells (¼supporting cells) at basal part of assimilatory filaments; after fertilisation, primary gonimoblast filaments cut off obliquely, carpogonial branches encircled by three to four involucral filaments produced from cortical cells adjacent to supporting cells, most cells of gonimoblasts differentiated into carposporangia, assimilatory filaments near mature carposporophyte branched one to two times and width of pit connections broadened among cells of carpogonial branches but no fusion cell formed.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
