Original publication and holotype designation: McGregor, G.B. & B.C.Sendall (2014). Phylogeny and toxicology of Lyngbya wollei (Cyanobacteria, Oscillatoriales) from north-eastern Australia, with a description of Microseira gen. nov. J. Phycol. 51(1): 109-119, 5 fig., 2 tables.
Description: Freshwater; thallus a prostrate, greenish blue-black woolly mat of densely aggregated filaments. Filaments straight to variously contorted, facultatively and infrequently pseudobranched. Sheath colorless, hyaline, when old distinctly lamellated (roughened) and colored, open at the apex. Trichomes isopolar, uniformly cylindrical, up to 70 µm wide; not or slightly constricted at the cross-walls. Cells discoid, 5–15 times broader than long; contents finely granular, without aerotopes; apical cells rounded, without a calyptra or thickened outer cell wall. Reproduction by motile hormogonia formed by necridia.
