Xiphosiphonia Savoie & G.W.Saunders, 2016

Holotype species: Xiphosiphonia ardreana (Maggs & Hommersand) Savoie & G.W.Saunders

Original publication and holotype designation: Savoie, A.M. & Saunders, G.W. (2016). A molecular phylogenetic and DNA barcode assessment of the tribe Pterosiphonieae (Ceramiales, Rhodophyta) emphasizing the Northeast Pacific. Botany 94: 917-939, 8 figs.

Description: Thalli growing in dense tufts or forming extensive turfs, consisting of numerous erect axes arising from an entangled, branched, prostrate basal system; polysiphonous with 6–12 pericentral cells; ecorticate; prostrate axes terete, attached to the substrate ventrally by unicellular rhizoids which are cut off from pericentral cells, bearing laterals in a spiral arrangement, arising every third segment, laterals simple and determinate or developing into indeterminate axes, either prostrate or erect; erect axes terete proximally, becoming more or less compressed distally, complanate, with pinnate, alternate-distichous determinate laterals and occasional indeterminate branches, determinate laterals simple, producing an overall linear-lanceolate thallus shape, proximal segments of laterals congenitally fused with the bearing axis over 1.5–3.0 axial segments; trichoblasts when present are abundant and formed near the apices in an alternate-distichous arrangement. Tetrasporangia tetrahedral, 1 per segment, developing in spiral series in cylindrical branchlets on determinate laterals

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
