Original publication and holotype designation: Gottschling, M., Calasan, A.Z., Kretschmann, J. & Gu, H. (2017). Two new generic names for dinophytes harbouring a diatom as an endosymbiont, Blixaea and Unruhdinium (Kryptoperidiniaceae, Peridiniales). Phytotaxa 306(4): 296-300, no fig.

Description: Thecate genus harbouring a diatom endosymbiont (Chaetoceros-like with numerous chloroplasts) separated from the host by a single membrane. Hypotheca with three to five, predominantly four, antapical spines of various size. Stigma surrounded by three membranes in the sulcal area.
