Description: Vegetative cells slightly longer than wide, cells arranged in packets of 4-16 cells held together by a gelatinous envelope; cloud-like colonies, with cell packets held together by a thin gelatinous matrix; 1 or more parietal chloroplasts; zoospores unknown; characterized by unique DNA sequences representing the 18S rRNA, psaA,psaB, psbA, psbC and rbcL genes.
