Description: Cells are rectangular, withrounded apices in girdle view. Girdle is composedof several plain and open bands. Valves are linearelliptic with two costae which are straight or slightlycurved to the outside and protrude deeply intothe valve. The spacing of the costa in Ambo isdistinctive, being restricted to near the apices. Thesternum is indistinct, observed only in the valveface apex in SEM, whereas observed in TEM ispositioned between the costa within the valve cen-ter. In all species included in the newly establishedgenus, areolae are restricted to the ends of thevalve face and mantle distal to the costa, leavingthe central part of the valve devoid of any poration.Areolae are relatively small and simple, with noobvious occlusions, and do not open into distinctgrooves internally. Areolae arranged in paralleltransapical striae of the valve face tending to beslightly oblique towards the mantle margin.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
