Description: The macrothallus is a uniseriate branched filament. The laterals are always scattered and each cell contains 1- more ribbon-shaped chloroplasts. The growth is diffuse intercalary. Pseudohairs are present. Plurilocular sporangia are terminal but they may also develop from normal vegetative cells below a pseudohair. Unilocular sporangia are terminal on short laterals. Ectocarpus is a widely distributed genus which shows great phenotypic plasticity. The life history is an isomorphic to slightly heteromorphic alternation of generations, but asexual strains also exist. Crossing experiments between various sexual strains have shown some degree of isolation; plasmogamy does not occur or there is chromosomal mismatch by meiosis in the F1-generation.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
