Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Coscinodiscus is Coscinodiscus argus Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Thalassiosira hyperborea var. pelagica (A.Cleve) G.R.Hasle.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), inhabiting lakes (Stearn 1983).
