Nomenclatural note
Pröschold & Darienko (2020: 132) consider "Protococcus bacillaris Nägeli ex Kützing 1849, Sp. Alg.: 198" to be the basionym of Stichococcus bacillaris Nägeli, 1849; however, Nägeli (1849) appears to have been published prior to July 1849 and Kützing (1849) appeared on 23-24 July 1849. Thus, there is good evidence to believe that Stichococcus bacillaris Nägeli has priority over Protococcus bacillaris Nägeli ex Kützing, even though they represent the same taxonomic entity. This is also implied by the ING entry. - (06 May 2020) - M.D. Guiry
Distributional note
A very common terrestrial alga, with cosmopolitan distribution (Ettl & Gärtner 1995). Occurring on a wide range of substrata, such as soil, stone walls, roofing tiles, tree trunks, glass, polythene and plastic; sometimes free-floating in small water bodies such as bird baths (John 2002). Never occurring in typically marine habitats, although present on moist banks anbd woodwork on the shores and in estuaries (Burrows 1991). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
