Type Information
Type locality: "Ad Novam-Hollandiam. (v s.)"; (Kützing 1849: 703) Holotype: MEL; 47417 (Kützing 1849: 703) Notes: Harvey et al. (2013: 137) note "Kützing's (1849) dried material (Fig. 49A) consists of a single fragment in a packet now in L and numbered 938.92-320. It is the only packet in Kützings herbarium that can be linked to the protologue of A. nobilis (Kützing 1849: p. 703). Kützing annotated this packet (Fig. 49B) with Amphiroa nobilis Sonder (an unpublished herbarium name that Kützing attributed to Sonder), Amphiroa nobilis Kg. (the protologue name), the number 30 (which was assigned to A. nobilis in the
protologue see Kützing 1849: p. 703), Tab. Phyc. VIII 51 (referring to pl. 51 in Kützing 1858, where the species is illustrated; illustrations are reproduced here in Fig. 49E), and N. Holland (=Australia, the collection locality). On another
label associated with L 938.92-320 (Fig. 49D), Kützing wrote Amphiroa nobilis N.Holld, galaxauroides N.H. and 4 Ex,
indicating he had seen four pieces of material. In conjunction with the present study, W. Woelkerling and W. F. Prudhomme van Reine discovered that the material illustrated in Kützing (1858) comes from MEL-47417 (Fig. 48A), being the same specimen on which Sonder (1848a: p. 188) based the earlier name A. galaxauroides var. tenuior (as ß tenuior)! MEL-47417 is
the only specimen in the Sonder herbarium on which Sonder wrote the name A. galaxauroides ß tenuior, and it is the only
Sonder specimen in MEL annotated by Kützing with A. nobilis Kg, Tab. ph. viii Tab. 51 f. II. The two pieces of material
illustrated on table 51 fig II and labelled g ad h are mirror images of the second piece from the right and the second piece
from the left on MEL-47417 (compare Figs 48A and 49E). Collectively, these annotations and the associated illustrations
provide strong evidence that Kützings fragment in L (938.92-320) originated from the Sonder specimen in MEL (47417), and that A. nobilis Kützing and A. galaxauroides var. tenuior are ultimately both based solely on MEL-471417."
