Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Cyclotella is Cyclotella tecta Håkansson & R.Ross.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cyclotella baltica (Grunow) H.Håkansson.

Type locality: Kiel, Germany; (Prasad & Nienow 2006: 134) Lectotype: W (Grunow's collection); slide 2241 (Håkansson 2002: 104) Notes: It is assumed (by Håkansson, 2002: 104) that Grunow"s material on slide 2241 is the same as the material Rabenhorst exsiccatum 1697. Original material: "Im Kieler Hafen auf Holzwerk. welches im Sommer unter Wasser (Rab. Alg. Eur. 1697) C. striata var. baltica, m viel" (according to to Grunow's annotations) (Hakansson, 2002: 104). Baltic Sea (INA).
