Type Information
Type locality: "Habitat in aquis stagnantibus" [around Paris, France]; (Thuillier 1799: 473) Neotype (In Nebenwassern des Rheines am Isteiner Klotz auf felsigem Grunde/20; designated by Wood in Wood & Imahori 1965: 417).: F. General Environment
This is a freshwater species.

Description
This is a slender species up to 20-30 cm in height. It is dioecious and has the gametangia in small heads which are enveloped in mucus. The mucus is only visible in the first part of the fructification. In contrast to N. capillaris the branchlets of the female plants are simple and undivided. The oogonia are up to 700 m in diameter. The oospores (300 450 m long) are black and have low ridges. The antheridium is up to 700 m in diameter.

Habitat
Nitella syncarpa is found in clear waters, in ditches, marshes and lakes. In Sweden the species is recorded from lakes, rivers and marshes with calcareous water (pH= 6.5-8.0). N. syncarpa is an autumn species, with mature gametangia from July to September (cfr. N. capillaris).

Distributional note
"The majority of the records are from Central and Western Europe (Fig. 66.4). In other regions Nitella syncarpa is rare or even absent: i.e. in Eastern Europe, on the Balkan peninsula, in Southern Europe, on the Iberian peninsula, in the British Isles and in Scandinavia and Northern parts of Europe. In most countries for which there are relevant data, Nitella syncarpa is reported as declining." (Bruinsma & van de Weyer 2024). - (09 January 2012) - M.D. Guiry

Conservational note
"Nitella syncarpa is a pioneer species. For the germination of this annual species it is important that there is little or no competition with other water plants. In deeper lakes the populations of Nitellasyncarpa seem to be more stable, especially in deeper parts where it is in complete vegetation cover. In the Baltic Sea Nitella syncarpa is probably limited by turbidity and wave exposure (Zhakova, 2004). Nitella syncarpa is listed in several Red Data Lists see (Chap. 9). Within ditches and pools it is necessary to maintain areas that are not covered with other macrophytes. It can be useful to remove other macrophytes to facilitate the germination of Nitella syncarpa. In general, all measures to reduce/prevent eutrophication are recommended. This also includes the management of fish communities which should be typical for the specific water body type. Nitella syncarpa is part of the Swedish action plan for Charophytes in lakes and small water bodies (Blindow et al., 2021)." (Bruinsma & van de Weyer 2024). - (22 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry
