Type Information
Type locality: [No locality, presumably Scotland]; (Lightfoot 1777: 972) "Lectotype" (Dixon 1983: 12; Bryant, Irvine & Ruffle 2012: 32): BM; 000005094 (Bryant & al. 2012: 32) Notes: Bryant, Irvine & Ruffle (2012: 32, expl. pl. 6)) report the annotation on the lectotype "No. 22. In moist shady places on the North side of Walls where no Grass grows, generally. This is a thin membranaceous substance, & I think it mostly is where people Pisses ag[ain]st Walls.” This observation agrees with the known ecology of this taxon which is often associated with sites rich in organic nitrogen (such as urine or guano)."
