Nomenclatural notes
Some authors credit this combination to J.Agardh (1841: 453 "Ad Nemalion transferenda est Mesogloia multifida..."), but Agardh never actually used the binomial, and Chauvin's (1842: 52) usage should be credited to him (M.J. Wynne, pers. comm.). - (23 March 2015) - M.D. Guiry
Rivularia (Roth) C. Agardh (1817: xxxviii, 130) was lectotypified with Rivularia dura Roth (1802: 273) by Geitler in Engler & Prantl (1942: 169). As this is an entity with a later starting point (ICBN Art. 13.1, Nostocaceae heterocysteae), under the provisions of ICBN Art. 13.2, all included species in the genus Rivularia thus also have a later starting point (1 January 1886), regardless of their current generic placement. Rivularia multifida Weber & Mohr (1804: 193, Pl. 3, fig. 1) is thus not a valid name dating from 1804. The earliest valid name that can be used for the entity widely known as Nemalion multifidum is Chordaria multifida Lyngbye (1819: 51). Chauvin (1842: 52) effected the transfer of this species to Nemalion. -- M.J. Wynne

Taxonomic note
In making the combination Chaetophora rubra, based on Ulva rubra Hudson, C. Agardh (1812) cites Rivularia multifida Weber & Mohr 1804 as a synonym which led authors to regard this entity as a Nemalion. If it does indeed represent this entity, Ulva rubra may be an early name for a species of Nemalion; however, Hudson's material from the south coast of England has not been re-examined. - (24 June 2014) - M.D. Guiry
