The type species (holotype) of the genus Karlodinium is Karlodinium micrum (B.Leadbeater & J.D.Dodge) J.Larsen.

Type Information
Type locality: Alfacs Bay, Ebro Delta, NW Mediterranean (Spain); (Bergholtz et al 2006: 173) Holotype: Botanical Museum, Copenhagen University (C); A-2381 (Bergholtz et al 2006: 173) Notes: Holotype: A fixed and embedded sample of culture K-0668. The Spanish isolate was established into clonal culture by M. Fernández-Tejedor. A subculture has been deposited in the Scandinavian Culture centre for Algae and Protozoa.
