This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Acanthoceras.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ceramium shuttleworthianum (Kützing) Rabenhorst.

Type Information
Type locality: "an den irischen Küsten: Shuttleworth!" [probably Co. Galway, Ireland]; (Kützing 1842: 739) Lectotype: Shuttleworth; L; 940.265.127 (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 72) Notes: No more precise locality is known in Ireland, although Shuttleworth is known to have been in Renvyl, Co. Galway in July, 1832 (M.E. Mitchell, pers. comm., Nov. 2001). He appears to have sent several Irish specimens to Kützing.
Eponomy
Robert James Shuttleworth (1810-1874) was in the Renvyl area in Connemara in 1830 and 1831 helping his stepbrother Blake on his estate. During this time he collected several algae, flowering plants (Webb & Scannell 1983: 16), and molluscs.
