The type species (holotype) of the genus Ectocarpus is Ectocarpus siliculosus (Dillwyn) Lyngbye.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Acinetospora crinita (Carmichael) Sauvageau.

Nomenclatural note
Ectocarpus crinitus is commonly accredited to Carmichael ex Harvey. But, since Harvey in Hooker (1833: 326) reported some of Carmichael'’s descriptions in quotation marks, it should be accredited to Carmichael (Furnari et al., 1999). Womersley (1987) cites the authority for this species as Carmichael ex Harvey. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
