According to Fletcher (1987) this species is a synonym of Chilionema ocellatum (Kützing) Kuckuck. John & al. (2004) cite Ectocarpus terminalis Kütz. sensu Kuck and Hecatonema terminale (Kütz) Kylin as synonyms of this species. fletcher (1987: 234) included "Hecatonema maculans Sauvageau (1897), p. 248, première forme" in the synonymy of Asperococcus fistulosus. - (11 May 2006) - G.M.
