The type species (lectotype) of the genus Valonia is Valonia aegagropila C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyosphaeria ocellata (M.Howe) J.L.Olsen.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), marked with two-coloured spots, having the centre of one colour surrounded by a broad ring of another (Stearn 1983).
