Distributional note
"Chara tenuispina is found in Southeastern Europe and as yet is unknown from Western Europe. The species was found in 44 localities from 11 countries (Poland - 11, Germany - 9, North Macedonia - 5, Serbia - 4, Greece - 3, Hungary - 3, Austria - 2, Montenegro - 2, Cyprus - 1, Romania - 1, Ukraine - 1). The species is currently listed from 11 localities in Poland, and from Balkan Penin-sula (2 in Montenegro, 3 in Serbia and 3 in Croatia). In the past, it was recorded for 8 localities in Germany, but recently only one occurrence could be confirmed (Krause, 1997; Krause and Grüttner, 1990). Three locations are known from Greece (Langangen and Pavlides, 1999), a few from soda pans from Hungary as well as from Ukrainian steppe (Iakushenko and Borysova, 2012; Palamar-Mordvintseva and Tsarenko, 2004). A common feature of C. tenuispina, is that it exists in shallow water sites that are rich in electrolyte content (Table 48.4). In Central Europe C. tenuispina is known mainly from grasslands fens, but in Southern Europe from shallow, very often ephemeral, salty aquatic waterbodies." (Gabka & Urbaniak 2024). - (15 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry

Conservational note
"In general, Chara tenuispina is one of the rarest and most threatened charophyte species in Europe. The main threats to the occurrence of C. tenuispina are anthropogenic draining of peatlands and vegetation succession in these localities." (Gabka & Urbaniak 2024). - (15 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry
