Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ophidocladus simpliciusculus (P.Crouan & H.Crouan) Falkenberg.

Type Information
Type locality: Anse du Minou, Finistère, France; (Crouan & Crouan 1852: no. 302) Lectotype: PC; 0581971 (Diaz-Tapia et al. 2014: 202, fig. 2) Notes: According to Womersley (2003: 337) the holotype should be in Herb. Crouan, CO and he describes an isotype (Crouan 302) in PC. No specimens of P. simpliciuscula were found in the Crouan brothers' Herbarium (CO but temporarily in PC), and a specimen corresponding to the Crouans' exsiccata was selected as lectotype in the herbarium of Thuret (Diaz-Tapia et al., 2014: 202).
