Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), provided with a pedicel, pedicelled (Stearn 1983).
General Environment
This is a marine species.
Description
Thalli epiphytic or endophytic
with vegetative filaments 2–4 (–6) cells long, sparsely
or highly branched, cells mostly variously lobed,
irregular in outline, each cell with highly alveolate
cytoplasm and 2–6 disk-shaped brown chloroplasts
without pyrenoids. Cell division occurs by typical
cytokinesis and by putative cleavage furrows. Typical
phaeophycean hairs are absent. Plurilocular reproductive
organs are irregularly globose, 80–140 µm in
diameter, divided into primary compartments by
cell wall invaginations; repeated cytoplasmic divisions
within these compartments result in orderly
rows of cells each maturing as a single spore.
Sporangial masses are raised, discrete or aggregated,
always nodular, formed at the end of a 1–4 cell
pedicel.
